Dog, Cat and Small Animal Food Storage

In storing food for your pet either dog, cat or other small animals: my suggestion is to buy very large airtight containers such as 5 gallon food grade buckets or 55 gallon food grade barrels which ever is easier for you to store, and remember to place it in an area where it does not have to be moved for these are heavy once they are filled.

Remove the food from it’s original containers or packaging and placing it in smaller Mylar bags (weekly, bimonthly or monthly size packaging portions) inside of the large container according to your pets size and food consumption.

Cat food and dog food seem to store very well in this manner for it is already dried food.

Be Prepared For Anything Your Pet Depends On You

Stock Up For Natural Disasters

This is good to do in the case of natural catastrophes such as hurricanes, tornado's, tsunami, any natural disasters that may occur making going to the market out of the question. It is good to stock up for at least a couple months worth for these types of disasters and more for long term food storage for your pets to have a better future.

In the event of one or more of the above mentioned disasters grocery stores usually sell out within 1 to 3 days. It has been known for their shelves to have been emptied in less then 24 hours upon hearing of a hurricane on the way.

In addition to stocking up on dry pet foods you should also think about storing water for yourself and your pets. If the electric goes off and your water pump does not work you are without water, unless you have prepared for such an event.

Be prepared for the worse and pray for the best or that nothing bad happens.

Stay Informed Of Stock Prices

Watch the stock market, generally when corn prices go higher so does the pet foods especially dog food. It is very important for every person to keep their self well informed about their own economical situation as the economy falls prices get higher and the need for long term food storage becomes more necessary.

Storing Pet Food

You can store your dry pet food the same way you store your own dry food.

If you have a few animals it would be beneficial to go ahead and buy the 55 gallon drums or barrels to use for your pet food.

The following video shows how to store your food in Mylar bags inside 5 gallon buckets, the same way he stores food for human consumption you can store animal food.

What To Buy And When To Buy

When you decide to start stocking up on your pets nutritional needs products you can do this easily by just adding an item or two extra to your grocery list each time you shop, this way it will not be such a strain on your pocketbook at one time.

You can buy a 5 gallon food grade bucket and one bag of food to start, or buy dog or cat treats. If you don't want to use the 5 gallon buckets then you can stock up on canned cat and dog food products. Being in the can the food will last longer than a bag sitting on the shelf, and you do not need to place this in a 5 gallon bucket, but you do need to store the cans in a dry dark cool place to help preserve the food in the cans.

If canned foods get hot then cold and hot again they can quickly sour, this is why they need to be stored in a dry dark cool place. This is true for any type of canned food, human and/or animal alike.

However can food storage for your pet is the same as human canned food, shelf life is approximately 1 to 2 years storage life. Where as dry pet food storage is very long term in the up wards of 10 plus years.

I store my dry cat and dog food in metal popcorn tins; however, they go through it so fast that really wouldn't be necessary in my case! :D Good advice, though! Rated up and useful!
